First Lines … ‘Life On The Edge’ by Jennifer Comeaux

Amazon ImageBAM!

My elbow whacked Chris’s forehead for the fourth time during practice. He grunted and caught me before I hit the ice. Though I’d skated over half of my nineteen years, I’d never had so many collisions. Of course, until a year ago, I’d never skated with a partner.

I cringed and touched Chris’s sweaty brow. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay.” He raked his hand through his thick dark hair. “A little head trauma never hurt anyone.”

I laughed wearily and arched my neck, stretching the sore muscles. The cold air wasn’t helping to loosen them. Looking up, my eyes honed in on the red, white and blue banner above the rink: ……

-.-

What is the banner saying and is it acting as a distraction, or an incentive to the pair?

Are the couple comfortable skating together, or is this an enforced partnership?

My Thoughts About … ‘From Now Until Forever’ by Sherry Gloag

-.-

SYNOPSIS

Amazon ImageFor Prince Liam, families meant bad news, unwanted commitments, and the loss of his personal freedom. Love spawned white picket fences, slippers at the hearth with a wife and kids making demands, so why did those images disappear when he met Melanie Babcot?

Melanie Babcot fought hard to escape the horrors of her youth and vowed to remain single and free, so when paid to protect Prince Liam from insurgents why did her personal pledge fly out the window?

-.-

PROFILING THE AUTHOR … SHERRY GLOAG

Sherry Gloag describes herself as a ‘displaced’ Scot, who, after spending her childhood in Scotland, now lives in the beautiful East Anglian countryside of Norfolk, where she is ideally placed for her hobbies of walking, gardening and craftwork.

Like many of us, Sherry does admit to talking to her characters, although she does take a good look around first, to make sure that she is alone!

Although she has always been an avid reader of romance, it was as recently as 2009 that she wrote her first stand-alone short story, (after the challenge was laid down by her husband, who had long known about her inner desire to write), with her debut novel ‘The Brat’, being published the following year.

If you want to know all there is to know and more, about Sherry, then there is a great and very in-depth interview with her, over on Morgen Bailey’s Writing Blog:

-.-

LINES FROM THE BOOK

‘Princes don’t marry for love, they marry for expediency’

‘I was so busy protecting the child you were, I never fully repected the man you’d become’

‘It wasn’t as much Liam didn’t want to come home, as he didn’t recognise the door never closed behind him when he left’

-.-

MY THOUGHTS ABOUT … ‘FROM NOW UNTIL FOREVER’

I was making comparisons about the slightly rebellious, fictional characters in this book and the real-life characters which they might so easily depict, from just reading the synposis and without evening turning the first page.

I was worried that a book of some notional 90 pages, might well be insufficient to do the story justice. However, by the end of the book, I was pleasingly assured that Sherry had got this one just about spot on for length and content detail. She has ably managed to maintain the fine balance of an eye-catching beginning, a strong central storyline and an ending, which although could be construed as slightly inconclusive, had done its job of getting the message across to the reader, in an accomplished and polished piece of writing. If I were to highlight the one weak point in the storyline, then it would be the issue I would have with Liam never recognising Melanie when they met, even though she had been shadowing him for three years as his bodyguard. If she were that stunning, surely he would have noticed her and that she seemed to appear everywhere that he did?

The romance and marriage between Liam and Melanie wouldn’t at first glance appear to be a ‘match made in heaven’ and begged the question, was this a marriage based on lies or love? It was certainly a relationship which thrived on action and adventure, as the plot move along at a breakneck pace, complete with its unexpected twists and turns along the way, together with plenty of tension and an ongoing battle of wills between the young couple.

The characters developed and grew in strength and as the story progressed, with a new found maturity and mutual support underpinning their relationship. They were both made painfully aware of all they had to lose, including each other, causing an inner resolve and determination to rise to the surface. The couple faced Liam’s parents united, each sure in the knowledge that they were resolved to continue with their marriage, after it had survived the tissue of lies on which it had at first been based and the tumultuous hardships it had endured along the way.

I also should comment on the changing attitudes of Liam’s parents and the influence that the young couple brought to bear in this transformation. True, they had never closed the door on Liam, even when he decided, perhaps with little thought about how his actions might affect the stability and even safety of his family, that he didn’t want to conform to the conventions of his position. Their open-mindedness to change would have been an enormous step forward for them and one they would have had to embrace with some caution and forethought. The sheer fact that they were prepared to accept change to save their relationship with their son, tells me just how much family values meant to them.

There seems to be two messages which feature strongly in this story.

There is the specific message that Royalty or Titled families are, by definition and tradition, subject to a more  public scrutiny of both their public and private lives, although the younger, modern generation are rebelling against this austere regime, forcing change within the traditionalist hierarchy of the family.

Then there is the more generic message that, no matter what a child does, or where they go, the door never truly closes behind them and that when ‘the chips are down’, they are still your son or daughter and will never be completly lost to you, or disowned by you and you will probably always defend them with your last breath, in an effort to see them enjoying a happy and fulfilled life.

THE HAIRDRESSER OF HARARE by TENDAI HUCHU

Amazon ImageLike very good dark chocolate this is a delicious novel, with a bitter-sweet flavour. Vimbai is a hairdresser, the best in Mrs Khumalo’s salon, and she knows she is the queen on whom they all depend. Her situation is reversed when the good-looking, smooth-talking Dumisani joins them. However, his charm and desire to please slowly erode Vimbai’s rancour and when he needs somewhere to live, Vimbai becomes his landlady. So, when Dumisani needs someone to accompany him to his brother’s wedding to help smooth over a family upset, Vimbai obliges. Startled to find that this smart hairdresser is the scion of one of the wealthiest families in Harare, she is equally surprised by the warmth of their welcome; and it is their subsequent generosity which appears to foster the relationship between the two young people. The ambiguity of this deepening friendship – used or embraced by Dumisani and Vimbai with different futures in mind – collapses in unexpected brutality when secrets and jealousies are exposed. Written with delightful humour and a penetrating eye, The Hairdresser of Harare is a novel that you will find hard to put down.

First Lines …. ‘His Chosen Bride’ by Sherry Gloag

December 19th

Henri Pierre Gasquet hesitated before knocking on his father’s office door. They’d shared breakfast together less than an hour ago and talked over many things, including Henri’s killer schedule for the next several months.

The King had given no indication of the need for a formal meeting this morning. With a fatalistic shrug, Henri knocked, waited a second, then turned the handle and entered the room.

-.-

This is the second book in the series ‘The Gasquet Princes’ and as Henri is the eldest of the four Princes and heir apparent, should we be surprised that his father, The King, wishes to see him at a moments notice? …. My Thoughts About … ‘Winter’s End’ by John Rickards

-.-

THE SYNOPSIS

Amazon ImageThey have the body of a slaughtered woman.

They have a half-naked man standing over her.

They have no idea how to make him talk.

And so they call in ex-FBI interrogator Alex Rourke to the traumatized Maine town of Winter’s End. The Boston Private Investigator knows the place well – it’s where he grew up. But as Rourke probes the mind of the enigmatic ‘Nicholas’, he is forced to re-examine his hometown and his own past – and what he finds is a place built on secrets.

Strange things have been happening in Winter’s End. The question is why. And if the man in custody does hold the answers to crimes both present and past, then Alex will have to get to them – and quickly. Because it soon becomes clear that what Nicholas has been waiting for from the beginning – is Alex Rourke.

-.-

THE AUTHOR

John “Sean Cregan” Rickards, cyberpunk and thriller writer, was born in 1978, in London, England.

He graduated from Cardiff University, Wales with a degree in Environmental Engineering, although he has never actually worked in the field.

He has instead, worked as a freelance journalist in the shipping industry on a succession of magazines and news publications, often in an editorial role.

Writing under his real name, John Rickards, he became a novelist and signed with Penguin Books at the age of 24.

In 2003, the character of Alex Rourke made his first appearance in ‘Winter’s End’, with a further three adventures following between then and 2008.

Following a lull in his writing career, John re-surfaced in 2010, with a brand new line in the genre of cyberpunk and under his new pseudonym of Sean Cregan. A total of two books to date have re-established him as an author to rival the best in the field of both genres.

He lives in Eastbourne, Sussex, on the South coast of the UK, with his partner and son.

-.-

WINTER’S END

When suspense novel becomes psychological thriller.

“Childhood events shape the rest of our lives, Mr.Rourke.

The first thing to say about ‘Winter’s End’, is that this book was written back in 2003, so crime detection procedures and forensic analysis methods have moved on apace since then. Even so, I think that this story stands its ground very well in the genre, even today and John Rickards is way up there with his contemporaries of the time … the likes of John Connolly and Michael Connelly.

The choice of cover art for this edition, was spot on, setting the scene for the dark and menacing force which has gripped small town America. Where fear is contagious and neighbour suspects neighbour, as the chilling truth is uncovered, piece by piece. A mysterious puzzle which everyone has their suspicions about, but which, to a person, they would rather had remained hidden in the depths of time.

Alex Rourke, once a child of this introspective community, is a flawed and broken man, abandoned by the system of justice he strived so hard to uphold, now working freelance on the outside, although still on behalf of truth and fairness. The incident which brought about his breakdown, has left him a loner, lonely, vulnerable and seemingly unable to commit to, or become close to anyone, so returning to his hometown to help out a colleague in need, isn’t really what he needs right now. His journey becomes something of a pilgrimage of self discovery, where he uncovers some pretty unpalatable home truths and dark secrets about his own family, that he isn’t expecting.

Romance is also on the cards for Alex, in the shape of pathologist, Gemma. However, whilst there is an obvious mutual attraction between the two, it is left to Gemma to do much of the groundwork. The two seem like a great match, with Gemma a caring, yet carefree individual and Alex responding to her nurturing in a positive and committed way, horrified when it seems that she might be in danger. Whether there is a future for them as a couple, I wouldn’t like to say, but it would seem that they are prepared to take things slowly for now, living their separate lives apart from one another, with Gemma more than respecting Alex’s need to re-examine his future and the direction in which he would like his life to go.

In our unknown ‘villain’, whom Alex has named ‘Nicholas’, we have a chilling, dark character, full of hatred and bitterness, seeking revenge in a terriflyingly final way, for wrongs he feels have been committed against him, both by the establishment in general and certain individuals in particular. His methods are calculating and systematic, his results brutal and final. His actions are all leading up to one decisive, irrevocable show-down, when the full extent of all the heinous injustices against him will be revealed and his final act of retribution will be meted out. Given the things that had happened to ‘Nicholas’ during his early years, I had to admit a grudging feeling of sadness and remorse for him, as I would for anyone else who had endured such incarceration and humiliation, as to alter the balance of their mind so completely.

The plot isn’t particularly fast paced, the moves have already been pre-ordained and the outcome a foregone conclusion, unless Alex acts quickly to change it. There are several twists and turns, as Alex tries to manipulate the endgame and trap his suspect, however the whole story is more one of a titanic battle of strength of will and mind games between two evenly matched adversaries. A plot firmly based on some great characterisations and human observations, with all their warts and flaws.

I had a couple of endgame scenarios mapped out in my head and was glad to see that I wasn’t too far off the mark with one of them, although I was never really sure which it was to be until right towards the end, which kept the suspense and tension building nicely, as I avidly devoured the pages.

This is a debut novel for both author and character and was curtailed into a short series of just four adventures in total. I shall be more than interested in acquiring the remaining three books, to see just where John takes Alex on both his professional and personal journey forwards.

-.-

This book was actually one from my own TBR mountain, although removing it hasn’t made any significant dent in the look of my shelves. It  would undoubtedly have been a charity shop ‘find’, at some point in the past and I only wish I had dug it out from its hiding place sooner.

First Lines …. ‘A Cold Day For Murder’ by Dana Stabenow

-.-

Amazon ImageThey came out of the south late that morning on a black-and-silver Ski-doo LT. The driver had thick eyebrows and a thicker beard and a lush fur ruff around his hood, all rimmed with frost from the moisture of  his breath.

He was a big man, made larger by parka, down bib overalls, fur mukluks and thick fur gauntlets. His teeeth were bared in a grin that was half-snarl. He looked like John Wayne ready to run the claim jumpers off his gold mine on that old White Mountain just a little southeast of Nome, if John Wayne had been outfitted by Eddie Bauer.

I haven’t started on this book as yet, so I literally switched my kindle on, copied down these first few lines, then left the book, so I have no idea where the lines will lead me.
