The Joan Hessayon Award 2010

American author Joan Hessayon was  a long time member of the RNA (Romantic Novelists Association) and a great supporter of the New Writers’ Scheme.

The Joan Hessayon Award is given yearly, to a new writer, whose first published work has been through the RNA’s New Writers’ Scheme.

The award is sponsored by Joan Hessayon’s husband, Dr. David Hessayon, in memory of his late wife.

The RNA is a professional writing association and aims to encourage new talent in the writing of romantic novels. These novels can be contemporary or historical, so long as they reflect all aspects of love and life.

The Joan Hessayon Award for 2010, was given to debut novelist Lucy King, for her novel ‘Bought: Damsel In Distress’

Desmond Elliott Prize 2010

The Desmond Elliott Prize, is an annual event, now in it’s third year and is awarded for the best first novel, written in English and published in the UK, with books from all fiction genres being considered.

The prize was created in memory of Desmond Elliott, literary agent and publisher,who died in 2003.

He stipulated that his estate should be invested in a charitable trust that would fund a literary award “to enrich the careers of new writers”, so the prize therefore also comes with a cash award of £10,000, to support the new writer and to celebrate their fiction work.

The awards and accolades just keep on coming for Sarah Waters.

This time it is the Casino de Santiago European Novel Award 2010, for her novel ‘The Night Watch’.

The Orange Award For New Writers was launched in 2005, in partnership with Arts Council England. Any work of fiction can be entered, so long as it has been writen by a woman, of any age or nationality and it has been published as a book in the United Kingdom. The award is given to the best emerging female literary talent and comes with a winning bursary of £10,000. The Award for 2010 went to ‘The Boy Next Door’, written by Irene Sabatini.

The Orange Prize 2010

The Orange Prize is awarded for a work of fiction, written by a woman, of any age or nationality, so long as it is written in English. The winner is awarded a bronze statuette, which is nicknamed the “Bessie” and in 2010, the prize also carries a cash award of £30,000.

This year’s winner, was by no means a unanimous decision and, in fact, the outspoken American author, may prove to be a controversial choice.
