-.-

I am still going with the romantic books landing in my mailbox. This week I was contacted by author Jennifer Comeaux, with a request to send me a Kindle download of her debut novel ‘Life On The Edge’, a YA romantic novel, with an Ice Skating theme to it, for me to post my thoughts about.

-.-

Amazon Image‘LIFE ON THE EDGE‘ by JENNIFER COMEAUX

Nineteen-year-old Emily is new to pairs skating, but she and her partner Chris have a big dream–to be the first American team to win Olympic gold. Their young coach Sergei, who left Russia after a mysterious end to his skating career, believes they can break through and make history.

Emily and Chris are on track to be top contenders at the 2002 Winter Games. But when forbidden feelings spark between Emily and Sergei, broken trust and an unexpected enemy threaten to derail Emily’s dreams of gold.

-.-

This YA romantic novel, was gifted as a request for me to read and leave my comments about, by its author, Jennifer Comeaux and as such was free of charge.

This will in no way influence any comments I may express about the book, in any blog article I may post. Any thoughts or comments will be my own personal opinion and I am in no way being monetarily compensated for this, or any other article.

Teaser Tuesdays 3rd April 2012

-.-

What Is ‘Teaser Tuesdays’?

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of ‘Should Be Reading’.

Anyone can take part, by just doing the following:

1. Grab your current read.

2. Open to a random page.

3. Share a couple of  “teaser” sentences, from somewhere on that page.

4. Be careful not to share “spoiler” sentences, that give away too much about the book.

5. Remember to share the title and author too.

6. Head on over to ‘should be reading’ and leave a link to your post, so that others can share it and you can share other people’s.

It would be great if you then decided to leave a comment, as we all like to receive them and are interested in your thoughts.

-.-

‘WINTER’S END’ by JOHN RICKARDS

Amazon ImageMy teaser lines this week, come from the book I am currently reading, although I have taken them from the half of the book that I have yet to read, so that I am in no way influenced to reveal too much about this amazing thriller.

So as not to show any ‘spoilers’, I have not included a synopsis for this book, however, if you want to find out more about it, just click on the book image.

-.-

PAGE 247

‘The dawn arrives and for the first time in what seems like forever, I don’t have to face breakfast alone in the echoing confines of the Crowhurst Lodge.’

‘”There were three notes in his desk, all delivered at specified times by courier firms. One warned him that if anyone came asking about St. Valentine’s or carrying a locket with the photo of a woman in, he was to “take measures” – I figure that’s where your fake prescription comes in, Alex.”‘

-.-

This is an excellent psychological thriller and one which I shall be sorry to finish. Rest assured I shall be on the lookout for the other three books in the ‘Alex Rourke’ series.

I seem to be on something of a roll with requests to review romance novels just recently and this week’s two ‘newbies’, are no exception. They constitute the first two books in a series of novellas known as ‘The Gasquet Princes’, so they ideally should be read together, so that I can get a persepective on how the story is developing over time and where it might be heading in the future.

-.-

‘FROM NOW UNTIL FOREVER’ by SHERRY GLOAG

Amazon Image  For Prince Liam, families meant bad news, unwanted commitments, and the loss of his personal freedom. Love spawned white picket fences, slippers at the hearth with a wife and kids making demands, so why did those images disappear when he met Melanie Babcot?

Melanie Babcot fought hard to escape the horrors of her youth and vowed to remain single and free, so when paid to protect Prince Liam from insurgents why did her personal pledge fly out the window?

-.-

‘HIS CHOSEN BRIDE’ by SHERRY GLOAG

Amazon Image Prince Henri Gasquet is happy to let his father, the king, choose his bride for him, until he meets Monica Latimer.

Monica Latimer is not prepared to risk letting any man close enough to learn about her Gift. A gift that normally has men running for the hills when they find out about it.

What will happen when both mindsets are challenged?

-.-

These romantic suspense novellas were gifted as a request for me to read and leave my comments about, by their author Sherry Gloag and as such were free of charge.

This will in no way influence any comments I may express about the book, in any blog article I may post. Any thoughts or comments will be my own personal opinion and I am in no way being monetarily compensated for this, or any other article.

This week I am waiting to get stuck into a book which first came to my attention after its review by fellow blogger Cath, over at Read Warbler. She got a little bogged down with this one (ambivilent was the word Cath used I think), but knowing how I like a good mystery, she suggested that I tried it, to see what I thought.

As it is available as a free  download to kindle I thought, ‘Nothing To Lose’, so have added it to my archive.

Reviews and thoughts can be a little subjective, as everyone’s tastes are quite different and what suits one person, may not suit another, so it will be interesting to see just how much my thoughts about the book differ from Cath’s own.

‘A COLD DAY FOR MURDER’ by DANA STABENOW

Amazon ImageSomewhere in the hinterlands of Alaska, among the millions of sprawling acres that comprise “The Park,” a young National Park Ranger has gone missing.

When the detective sent after him also vanishes, the Anchorage DA’s department must turn to their reluctant former investigator, Kate Shugak.

Shugak knows The Park because she’s of The Park, an Aleut who left her home village of Niniltna to pursue education, a career, and the righting of wrongs. Kate’s search for the missing men will take her from self-imposed exile back to a life she’d left behind, and face-to-face with people and problems she’d hoped never to confront again.

Written way back in 1992, A Cold Day for Murder The first novel in the popular Kate Shugak Series, and established Dana Stabenow as a new voice in Alaskan mystery writing,  also earning her an Edgar Award.

As there will soon be 19 books in this series, I am a little late in discovering them, but if I do enjoy the style of writing, then I shall be tackling the rest of the series (I shall definitely aim to read this series in strict order of publishing), just as soon as possible.

Don’t forget that Kathy and the rest of us, all love to read your comments  as well!!

My Words This Week Come From:

The Parting Gift by Rachel Van Dyken and Leah Sanders

-.-

I am  almost certain that many of my US followers will know both of these words, however they are certainly new to me, so I thought them to be worthwhile mentioning.

-.-

1. COOTIES

… Then, as if Blaine was terrified she would somehow give him COOTIES, he leapt to his feet and pulled her to hers …

Cooties is, in American childlore, a kind of infectious disease. The term may have originated with references to lice, fleas, and other parasites. A child is said to “catch” cooties through any form of bodily contact, proximity, or touching of an “infected” person or from a person of the opposite sex of the same age. Often the “infected” person is someone who is perceived as “different” and bears some kind of social stigma: of the opposite sex, disabled, someone who is shy or withdrawn, someone who has peculiar mannerisms, etc.

-.-

2. LONG-HANDLES

… He grabbed his jeans from the sewing chair and pulled them over his long-handles hurriedly ….

Long-Handles are basically what I would have assumed from the context in which it was written, to be little more than long underwear.

Here in the UK however, this word is virtually unknown and our own description of a similar garment would be Long-Johns.  I really did have to chuckle at the definition of Long-Johns in all the on-line dictionaries, where they are described so proudly as “informal” underpants … “informal”, what’s that all about? What on earth do ‘formal’ underpants look like I ask myself ?

Then I came across another anomaly, in several parts of the US, a Long-John is another name for a frosted bar-shaped doughnut with a variety of fillings. Here in the UK, a doughnut is simply a doughnut, whatever the filling and frosting. Subsequently I read that some US Long-John doughnuts, are called Eclairs, whereas an eclair in the UK, is a bar shaped choux pastry cake, filled with cream and topped with melted chocolate …..

Click on the link for the recipe, they really are delicious

This is getting too complicated for my poor little brain, although I can’t help smiling at the thought of the fun to be had in both countries, when making purchases from a shop …

-.-

After all that distraction, back to the serious stuff …. books, I am really enjoying ‘The Parting Gift’ so far.

Happy reading all!

My words this week are taken from:

The Lost Luggage Porter (Jim Stringer Mystery) by Andrew Martin ..

”A novel of murder, mystery and steam.

-.-

1. CLARTED

…The platforms were clarted with spilt paint and flour, half-cabbages, and the remnants of long-gone cargoes…

1. To be covered in something, normally referred to an object … “My boots were clarted in mud.”

2. To put too much on something … “She clarted her face with makeup.”

3. The act of clapping to disguise the sound of one’s fart.

-.-

2. PARLANCE

…He had not been ‘fixed’ in the parlance of Sampson and Hopkins; he would not have to go down in my report…

1. A particular manner of speaking, especially when specialized: eg. political parlance

2. Any discussion, such as a debate

-.-

3. DEMURRAGE

… “Five hundred invoices a day,” he said, making a writing motion, “… and  demurrage bills are a great scarcity across my desk, I can tell you that.”

1. Detention of a ship, freight car, or other cargo conveyance during loading or unloading beyond the scheduled time of departure.

2. Compensation paid for such detention.

3. A fee charged by the Bank of England for changing bullion into notes.

-.-

4. PORTERAGE

… Sacks he charged for, which he shouldn’t have; porterage which he should’ve, he bloody did not …

1. The carrying of burdens or goods as done by porters.

2. The charge for this activity.

I could have probably worked this one out for myself, but it is such a ‘good sounding word’, that I  simply wanted to include it …. hope you don’t mind?

-.-

This weeks post will bring you up to date on the remaining great books I downloaded from ‘Smashwords‘, as part of the first birthday giveaway offer, from the fantastic ladies at Astraea Press.

They are all from the ‘parent genre’ of romantic fiction, although the individual books come from various sub-genres, from contemporary romance, to historical romance; fantasy romance, through to paranormal romance.

It is also good to see that Astraea Press is run so well by a group of ladies who are themselves romantic fiction authors and have included some of their own books in this great giveaway.

I probably won’t be attempting a marathon romance read anytime soon, however these lovely additions to my TBR titles will fit nicely between books from other genres and I shall definitely be writing and posting reviews for them all.

If you want to discover more about the individual authors then click on the naming links and to read a full synopsis for the individual books simply click on the image.

Finally, just to ‘ring the changes’ somewhat, this book was passed on to me by my father, who rated this one as ‘average’, which is his version of everyone else’s ‘great’, so I can’t wait to try it!

BLOOD HARVEST by S.J. BOLTON

Sometimes I wish that she’d just leave me in peace.

Amazon ImageNOW YOU SEE HER… Gillian is haunted by the disappearance of her little girl two years ago. A devastating fire burned down their home, but she remains convinced her daughter survived.

NOW YOU DON’T… Ten-year-old Tom lives by the town’s neglected churchyard. Is he the only one who sees the strange, solitary child playing there? And what is she trying to tell him?

NOW YOU RUN… There’s a new vicar in town – Harry – and he’s meeting the locals. But menacing events suggest he isn’t welcome. What terrible secret is this town hiding?

I have a whole host of new books added to my kindle this week, courtesy of the lovely ladies at Astraea Press and Mark and the gang over at Smashwords …. and the best thing of all, they were all FREE!

Astraea are celebrating their birthday and decided to give away a different book each day, throughout the month of February. Unfortunately I didn’t monitor my ‘timeline’ closely enough, so I missed quite a few of the earlier titles, as the voucher codes are only valid on the day they are published, however I am still pleased with my gathering …. and the month still isn’t over yet!

Astraea was formed in 2010 when Stephanie Taylor saw the need for a non-erotic e-publisher that offers wholesome reads but still maintains the quality of mainstream romance, so needless to say my books are all generally from the romantic fiction genre, although they cover a whole range of sub-genres, from contemporary romance, to historical romance, fantasy romance, through to paranormal romance.

It is also good to see that Astraea Press is run so well by a group of ladies who are themselves romantic fiction authors and have included some of their own books in this great giveaway.

My words this week, are all taken from ‘The Baggage Handler’ by Colin Browne

-.-

NB … A couple of these words have several meanings, some of which are either a little on the gruesome side, or even in one case, not suitable to be put to print in this environment.

I have therefore only highlighted the meaning as used in context with the extract taken from the book.

There are some pretty awful videos of people ‘chugging’ on ‘YouTube’, if you are still curious. Just Google ‘How To Chug A Beer’

A Must For All You Avid Romance Readers Out There …

-.-

This post is for the attention of all readers of romantic fiction out there, who would like the opportunity to read and review some great books for free!

The offer is a voucher code, entitling you to a free of charge, different titled, romance book, each day for the entire month of February.

Or at least it would have been if I had noticed the reminders earlier on in the month, as the codes are only valid for the day on which they are printed.

Nonetheless, thanks to it being a ‘leap year’ in 2012, there are still 10 more days worth of vouchers and books to collect and download, in a way to suit everyone.

The offer is courtesy of Stephanie Taylor and all the other lovely ladies at Astraea Press, as part of their first birthday celebrations.

The offer is in conjunction with Mark Coker and his team at Smashwords e-publishers, where you can also leave a review of each book as you finish it.

A couple of the books in this great offer, which have already passed me by, I have previously read and reviewed by direct arrangement with the authors:

‘Double Crossing’ by Meg Mimms

‘The Perfect Rose’ by Felicia Rogers

Both are available from smashwords, relatively inexpensively and are well worth the $3 each.

This is a great opportunity to get to know a couple of new up-and-coming businesses and a whole host of both well established and fledgling authors.

So hurry up and visit the Astraea Press blog, for today’s promotion code and get reading!
