YvonneBeemer cursed.
Two words.
Two syllables.
A mental rimshot inside Greg Beem’s skull. The simple phrase was perfectly descriptive, and summed up just about every seminal moment of the Beemer’s twenty-nine years. The curse described a moment that was, in truth, formative. Beemer could catalogue his life with his very own cursed moments.
… I wet the bed.
… the gun went off.
… she’s really pregnant?
… my parachute didn’t open.
… that knife was sharper than I thought.
… the bitch actually left me.
… I really didn’t mean to burn the house down.
Beemer’s most recent cursed moment began at 3:16 A.M. on August sixth. Beemer remembered the time because, for some unknown reason, his eyes had flicked to the digital clock display on the dashboard of the Peterbilt tandem axle tractor rig.

I say this, because in the particular case of ‘Blood Money’, those first lines just aren’t what I expected after reading the book’s premise, although the idea of trying to ‘pigeon hole’ my life into a series of cursed moments, sounds like a great way to try defining myself.

I loved this author’s style of writing in ‘The Safety Expert’ which I read and reviewed last year, so I am hoping for a similarly intriguing storyline with ‘Blood Money’. If you enjoy a good ‘gutsy’ thriller, then I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

I wasn’t quite sure about those first few lines at first, but I think they need a couple of reads to really get them into context and then they do actually become quite meaningful and powerful in their emotion.
Let’s just hope that the rest of the story is written with the same strength of feeling, if so I am in for quite some read!

‘Beemer’s’ thoughts don’t appear to very pleasant ones either, do they? he seems to have more ‘cursed’ moments than anything else and it sounds as though he is about to have another moment to add to his list. At 3:16 am, I am guessing that this event, whatever it might be, isn’t about to be any better than any of the others by which he can track his life so far!

I have to be honest, if I was to be faced with just those opening lines on their own, I may think twice about picking this book as a must read. You definitely need to read the lines in conjunction with the synopsis, when they take on an entirely new and relevant meaning.
The dark, brooding words of the opening lines are a true reflection of the storyline and a main protagonist who is obviously very deeply troubled and seeking vengeance. At 3:16am, there is obviously just one thing too many going on in Beemer’s life, that finally tips him over the edge and makes this book a must read for me.

My Book Beginnings

A curse, or simply bad luck and ‘wrong place, wrong time’ syndrome?
Beemer is definitely only focussing on the negative aspects of his life, so I am eager to discover if and how he manages to turn things around in the storyline, although I suspect that his middle of the night event isn’t going to help matters too much … I wonder just what it is?

Intense thrillers seem to be this author’s speciality, if the last one of his books I read is anything to go by.
Those first few lines seem to be setting the scene very nicely for what is about to follow, if the synopsis is in any way accurate.
Beemer does appear to be on a real downer with his life right now, the jump from wetting the bed to burning the house down, is but a few short steps in his mind, so look out for the next curse is all I can say, it is sure to be something pretty spectacular!
