My elbow whacked Chris’s forehead for the fourth time during practice. He grunted and caught me before I hit the ice. Though I’d skated over half of my nineteen years, I’d never had so many collisions. Of course, until a year ago, I’d never skated with a partner.
I cringed and touched Chris’s sweaty brow. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay.” He raked his hand through his thick dark hair. “A little head trauma never hurt anyone.”
I laughed wearily and arched my neck, stretching the sore muscles. The cold air wasn’t helping to loosen them. Looking up, my eyes honed in on the red, white and blue banner above the rink: ……

This sounds like a very interesting book – I adore ice-skating and this sounds like one I’d like to pick up!

Like yourself, I love ice skating and ice dance, but only to watch I hasten to add. I am purely an armchair critic!
The author is herself, somewhat addicted to ice skating (I don’t think that’s putting it too strongly if you check out her website), which is a great basis for writing a story around it.
I notice that since she requested this review from me and I last visited her site, she has now started working on the sequel, so I am only hoping that this book doesn’t end ‘up in the air’ and me needing to read the second book to find out what happens.

Like me, I know that your preferred genre is crime/thriller/mystery books. However, just lately I seem to have received rather a lot of author review requests for romantic fiction. I am not averse to reading the occasional romance, so I wouldn’t want to refuse any requests, especially when they are written by an author with an obvious passion for the background story she has chosen.
Although I love to watch ice skating and ice dancing, I am afraid that ‘Dancing On Ice’ just isn’t something that I could watch. I really can’t stand reality television of any description, especially when the programmes centre around ‘so called’ celebrity.
The work which Torvill and Dean do to help up and coming youngsters entering the world of ice skating and ice dance, is truly incredible and I do wonder just why they need to get mixed up in reality show entertainment.
Wouldn’t do if we all thought the same way, would it?

I have only just started the book, but I should imagine that from what I already know about the author, it has been well researched, which is always a good sign for me.
It is certainly a unique storyline from my reading experience and although romantic fiction isn’t my most preferred genre, it looks to have everything going for it, to make it a good read.

I am not sure about this one. Obviously the couple is very young, to young for me, and ice skating is no hobby of mine, neither active nor passive. But it sounds like quite a nice read, nevertheless.

I couldn’t read this kind of ‘sweet’ romance on a regular basis, however, if it is well written, with a good underlying storyline, then I would like to think that Jennifer has the opportunity to pitch her books to the appropriate group of readers, so I generally try to base my reviews not on whether I enjoyed the story or not, but on the quality of the story and writing style.
It obviously helps if I also enjoy the book and it is off to a good start so far.

It is a good thing that we don’t all enjoy reading the same genre of books, or we would soon run out of things to chat about!
I still like to read other peoples comments about books, even if I wouldn’t necessarily read the book myself and I do like to go off and research the books and authors which are mentioned, just in case I am missing out on something and also so that I can leave an informed comment about other people’s posts.

There have, from what I can see, never been any memorable British films made about ice skating, despite the several world champions we have produced in more than one of the disciplines.
The next person to comment after yourself, has suggested that the film you might be thinking of is ‘Ice Castles’, starring Robby Benson.
I have found a couple of sites however, which suggest that there were certainly quite a few US films produced about the sport:

The film that you mentioned, ‘Ice Castles’, did indeed star Robby Benson, although it was only one of a number of films about ice skating, which were made for the US market.

I have read further on into the story, since publishing this post on Friday and I can assure you, that your scenario doesn’t seem to be the way things are heading at all!!
Of course that may all change again, but I shall be very surprised if it does!
At the moment, Jennifer is doing a great job of keeping the background, ice skating storyline focused and getting a great balance going with the romance elements.

Ah! I think that Emily has a reason for her bad performance at the start of the book … and it isn’t the romance! If I was trying to pull off the move she is, I think that the poor guy would have more than a bump on his head by now!!
I have never even had the urge to try ice skating, although I can remember my nieces going to one or two ice skating parties, with me left on the sidelines wondering if I was going to be taking them home minus a couple of fingers! My godson also went through a phase of playing ice hockey, although from what I remember, that didn’t last too long!
I guessed that this wouldn’t typically be your kind of book and it is not something that I would be reading on a regular basis, but having said that, it is shaping up quite nicely so far and is a pleasant read, with a good message coming through strongly.

I’m forever asking questions about a storyline all the while I am reading it. I get really impatient to know what happens at the end of a book, although unlike my sister-in-law, I would never be tempted to go to the last couple of pages to find out!
Her philosophy when she reads a book, is to read the first couple of chapters, a portion from the middle and then the last few pages, on the basis that most of the stuff in between is all padding and superfluous to the actual story!! Needless to say, she doesn’t read much!!
Winter Olympics, or any Winter sports that I get the chance to catch up on, are always looked forward to by me, although only if I can wrestle the TV remote away from Mr.G, who doesn’t like sport at all!!

This book reminds me of another book about skaters that had a movie made based on it. I don’t remember the name, but it was good. I might try this one if I can ever get caught up on my commitment books.

This is one of my author request (commitment) books, so I have the chance to read it now and so far the story is shaping up pretty well.
I am lucky enough to have a steady stream of authors contacting me direct with their requests, but as you say, it is so easy to become overwhelmed with them all and I would hate to end up by letting any of them down, so I have to write things down like a rota sheet, so that everything gets done in the right order.
Consequently, my TBR mountain never gets any smaller, in fact it is still growing with books that friends and family pass on to me and I just can’t say no!
