‘One To Watch’ By Rachel Amphlett
Book Beginnings / First Lines

Cover Image Of The Book 'One To Watch' By Author Rachel AmphlettEva Shepparton cried out once, her voice swallowed by the music and loud voices that emanated from the white marquee at the top half of the garden, and flung out her hands to keep her balance.

She steadied herself, cursed the damp grass from the morning’s rain shower and stood with her hands on her hips, breathing hard while she glared back up the slope towards the party.

In hindsight, she should’ve asked where the toilet was – or water closet, as Sophie’s mother would have insisted – except she couldn’t bring herself to approach the officious woman, or her husband.

Sophie was nowhere to be found – Eva hadn’t seen her since the speeches, so instead, she’d decided that the thicket of rhododendron bushes would have to do instead.

She sighed. If it weren’t for the fact that Sophie was such a good friend, she’d never have agreed to be here in the first place.

Hours later, she was dead.

Detective Kay Hunter and her colleagues are shocked by the vicious murder of a teenage girl at a private party in the Kentish countryside.

A tangled web of dark secrets is exposed as twisted motives point to a history of greed and corruption within the tight-knit community.

Confronted by a growing number of suspects and her own enemies who are waging a vendetta against her, Kay makes a shocking discovery that will make her question her trust in everyone she knows.

I can’t remember a time, even as a child, when I haven’t been passionate about books and reading.
I began blogging, when I realised just how many other people out there shared my passion for the written word and I have been continually amazed at the wealth of books that are available and the amount of great new friends I have made, from literally 'The Four Corners Of The World'.

  • Backed up by the premise, the opening lines get off to a great start and pull me right in. I’m curious what secret Sophie knew and whether she’d shared it with Eva. I hope Eva doesn’t drop her drawers before stepping behind the bushes since I have a feeling she might finally find her friend!

I can’t remember if you’ve read any in this series yet. It sounds good.

    • I am also assuming that Eva is about to find Sophie, if she goes into the bushes.

If it is indeed Eva with whom Sophie has shared her secret, I am also betting that Eva’s is the next name on the killer’s list and I wonder if she is going to work that out before it is too late?

I am left wondering what shocking and personal sounding discovery Kay Hunter makes during the course of her investigations?

I read the first book in the series ‘Scared To Death’ and the only reason I haven’t moved on further with the series, is simply the problem of not having enough time and having so many other great books crossing my desk for promotion.

Knowing as I do, how you like to read a series in sequence from the beginning, this is definitely a series I would recommend you check out whilst we are still at the early stages of its development, as I can see it running for quite some time 🙂

    • Sophie is missing and we know from the premise that after sharing a secret, she is found dead. You surely don’t need to be a genius to work out that Eva is about to find more than she bargained for in the bushes … or is that just a red herring?

Need to keep on reading to find out 🙂

      Happy Reading 🙂

  • An excellent start which would certainly make me want to to read on. Is this the start of a new series or an already established one?

Hope you’re coping with this awful heat? The beginning of the week was so nice, overcast and showery. Thank goodness they’re saying that next week will be a few degrees cooler. I’ll take anything I can get. Have a lovely weekend!

    • The heat is really becoming quite unbearable for me right now, with every day setting seemingly higher and higher temperature records. I do try to have any moans and groans as quietly as possible, as there seems to be a vocal majority who absolutely love this weather and I am fed up of having my own opinion challenged and shouted down. How about you?

The Detective Kay Hunter series is now into its 6th book, so is relatively well established. People are saying that the stories do work okay as stand alones, but as I have only so far actually read book #1 for myself, I am in no real position to say one way or the other.

From promotional extracts I have shared and my own experience with ‘Scared To Death’ (book #1), I do however enjoy Rachel’s style of writing and character narrative, if that’s any help to you 🙂

    • This is the third series of thrillers Rachel has written, together with a few other stand alone stories and I would say that all the cover art for her books has been very carefully chosen to look eye-catching and help set a style which is recognisable as hers.

Nice to have you visit today and Happy Reading 🙂

    • ‘Scared To Death’, the first book in the Kay Hunter series, is in fact the only one I have managed to read to date, although I have the full suite of six books sat in my TBR pile, waiting for me to get to them.

I have worked with author Rachel Amphlett on several promotional articles and Guest Posts, so I feel as if I know the stories intimately already, but I still can’t wait to read them just the same.

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your weekend 🙂

    • This is book #3 in the Kay Hunter series and whilst the stories do work well as stand alones, if you check out the running order over at Fantastic Fiction, you might decide to begin the series at ground level, with ‘Scared To Death’, which was really good.

Definitely an author worth adding to your list. After all, who amongst us really takes any notice of how big our TBR piles are any more!!

Have a good weekend, it is definitely going to be a hot one 🙂
