Curious Cupboards #1
‘The Kitchen Cupboard’
Ravensburger Puzzles
Review

As happens from time to time, I am making a short diversion away from the ‘bookish’ posts you will usually find here, to share one of my other pastimes with you.

Yes! I am a not so secret dissectologist – or someone who enjoys jigsaw puzzle assembly.

Clicking on this Amazon link will allow you to magnify individual montages, for a closer look inside all the crazy cupboards of this 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle

Artist Colin Thompson’s trademark, pesky little pink gremlins are back again and up to more mischief!

This is another of those puzzles where starting assembly the traditional way, outside edge first, just doesn’t work and all those cupboard shelves really caused me a headache!

I had no idea that this series of ‘Curious Cupboard’ jigsaws, were numbered, so as with my reading, I have dipped in and out of the series, rather than work through them in numerical order! I really can’t think that it would make too much difference with a jigsaw puzzle, however if I have made any of you cringe for committing such a crime – I do apologise 🙂

THE KITCHEN CUPBOARD‘ – (Curious Cupboards #1) by RAVENSBURGER

Image of the Ravensburger 1,000 piece jigsaw 'The Kitchen Cupboard' - back of the boxMost of us are guilty of cramming things into cupboards, but we doubt whether your own shelves will ever resemble those shown on this puzzle.

Take a close look and delight in the strange gizmos, peculiar gadgets and bizarre creatures just waiting to be discovered as you piece the puzzle together.

As we’ve come to expect from artist Colin Thompson, the image is packed with clever touches and word play especially designed to appeal to puzzle fans.

So enter this Curious Cupboard and prepare to be absorbed, amused and amazed!

ARTIST COLIN THOMPSON

Image of author and artist Colin ThompsonColin Thompson’s unique work is packed with fun and intrigue, objects and events, as can be seen in his hugely popular puzzle designs.

He is also a well known children’s author and illustrator, with many published picture books, collections of poetry and novels to his name.

Colin’s life story is unique, interesting and very personally told, so to attempt a ‘potted’ version here, I would never be able to do justice to the person and his amazing talent.

It looks as though Colin may no longer be compiling his books or artwork, however I will leave a link to his static website, where you can get a peek at some of the other great puzzle images he has created.

The Kitchen Cupboard, like so many of my jigsaws, was a charity shop purchase, from Dorothy House Hospice shop in Warminster, Wiltshire, where I volunteer.

Any thoughts or comments are my own personal opinion and I am in no way being monetarily compensated for this, or any other article promoting Ravensburger puzzles.

I personally do not agree with ‘rating’ a purchase, as the overall experience is all a matter of personal taste, which varies from person to person. However some review sites do demand a rating value, so when this review is posted to such a site, it will attract 5 out of 5 stars.

I can’t remember a time, even as a child, when I haven’t been passionate about books and reading.
I began blogging, when I realised just how many other people out there shared my passion for the written word and I have been continually amazed at the wealth of books that are available and the amount of great new friends I have made, from literally 'The Four Corners Of The World'.

  • Yvonne, I enjoy your puzzle posts 🙂 This one looks to be quite challenging but I’d give it a try. I’ll watch for Colin Thompson’s puzzles – and I’m already a fan of the Ravensburger brand. Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Mary,

I really appreciate those kind words of thanks 🙂

It doesn’t look as though Colin Thompson is very active with any of his artistic pursuits any more, however there are a few of the Ravensburger puzzles which feature his art, so you may be lucky enough to come across one or two of them on your travels.

Ravensburger and Gibsons are definitely the two most quality brands of jigsaw here in the UK, so I generally try to stick with them if I can.

Take Care and have a good weekend 🙂

  • I love this one, Yvonne! It might be one of my favorites that you’ve worked in recent memory. I also love the little “hidden” pink gremlins. I hope you enjoyed your time spent assembling it. 🙂

    • Hi Kelly!

This style of jigsaw is perfect for me and as I was sorting out my puzzle corner the other day, I could see at least another couple from the series, so I can’t wait to get to them.

I have completed and published reviews about two or three Ravensburger puzzles that feature Colin’s artwork, which I really like. It is such a shame that he appears to have stepped out of the limelight in recent years.

The older posts are still there, but the image links seem to have stopped working, so when I get a few moments I will try and remember to go into the edit board and try to sort them out – Sorry!

They may not always be pink, but his puzzles always feature his trademark gremlins hiding somewhere in the picture, causing chaos and mayhem!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope that things are okay with you right now 🙂

  • I’ve done several Colin Thompson puzzles but don’t remember seeing The Kitchen Cupboard before. Although that doesn’t mean much as my brain seems to be permanently addled these days and I may have forgotten. It’s a super puzzle!

    • Hi Cath,

My brain went to mush a long time ago!!

Just ventured out this morning to be the guinea pigs for our hairdresser, was done by 10am and couldn’t wait to get back indoors!!

Ravensburger doesn’t have all the ‘Curious Cupboards’ series available on their website, so perhaps some of the early ones are now discontinued, but it looks as though there were at least six different ones in that particular set. I have already featured ‘The Craft Cupboard’ and I do own a couple of the others I’m sure.

I do like those signature hidden pink gremlins in this series. Colin was certainly a very talented artist.

I hope that all remains well with Peter’s recovery and that you are both staying safe. I have a funny feeling we aren’t out of the woods yet 🙂
