CHAPTER FOURTEEN
“La Mesa – owned and managed by Brian’s mother, Maria Paulen – was among Krista’s favorite restaurants in a town noted for many good ones. Normally she would have been delighted to drop by midmorning, at Maria’s request, for whatever reason; but accepting the woman’s invitation today meant postponing a follow-up meeting on the music festival with key county health department board members.
Still, Krista hadn’t hesitated in accepting. Not when Maria told her she was gathering the wives and other women with direct ties to the members of the Pistons. She wanted to hear their concerns and answer any questions they might have.
And maybe get some information from them that she didn’t have.
The restaurant itself was on the corner of Franklin and Commerce, across from the blacksmith museum, a parking lot, and the grass-covered rise of the levee. The pueblo-style building, making a sideways L with its rounded wing, was pale pink with pastel-green trim; dark red lettering said LA MESA over the doors and more red edged the steps leading to a deck that served as a patio. This was where the women would gather at ten thirty on this warm but not hot May morning.
The restaurant didn’t open till 11:00 a.m. Maria had snugged an extra chair up to one of the hot-pink umbrella-shaded tables for four. She had even moved one of the latticework dividers to give her guests some privacy, if their conversation lasted long enough for other patrons to arrive.
Krista got there right on time but was still the last to show up…”

GIRL CAN’T HELP IT (Krista Larsen Book #2) – by MAX ALLAN COLLINS
No sooner do Hot Rod and the Pistons reunite for their induction into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, than two band members take a final bow. Both alleged suicides. A tragic way to go out. A bum way for one-hit wonders to be remembered. But it’s Labor Day weekend. The show must go on.
With replacements at the ready, the Pistons are back on home turf to headline the first ever Rock and Country Music Fest. Police Chief Krista Larson and her father, Keith, are there listening. And watching. Because they suspect there may be more to the band members’ untimely deaths than anyone else can see.
As Krista and Keith navigate the investigation, a dark picture of the band’s rocky history begins to take center stage.
As betrayal, revenge, and blackmail start playing out in the present, the father-daughter team fear that this encore may be the band’s finale.

Now I am hooked! I also love that cover, which suggests a few interesting twists.
Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.
Well! Let’s put it this way – I had two suspects on my list and it wasn’t either of those, so yes, there were one or two unexpected twists!
Not an overly challenging read, just right for a couple of pleasant spring sunshine lockdown afternoons in the garden!
Take Care, Stay Safe and thanks for stopping by 🙂
Two suicides? Fishy… Sounds like an intriguing book. Thanks for sharing 🙂 Take care of you and yours.
Hi Becki,
Thanks for stopping by today, it is good to ‘meet’ you. I always appreciate any comments and enjoy the exchange of views about the books I feature.
I have to admit that part of this story is narrated through the eyes of the perpetrator, so as the reader I knew exactly what was going on in ‘real time’.
However that in no way spoiled the story and I still managed to get the identity of the suspect wrong, so not all was revealed that easily!
Stay Safe and Take Care 🙂
Sounds like an interesting story. I’ll have to look into it. My Teaser is from The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda.
Hi Laura,
Author Max Allan Collins has enjoyed a long and illustrious career spanning most forms of media writing. He has therefore taken this opportunity to indulge himself and focus the storyline for ‘Girl Most Likely’ around one of his other passions in life, rock ‘n’ roll. Whilst this doesn’t threaten to overwhelm the story, it forms a definite central focus for all the action, so perhaps that’s just something to bear in mind when you check this one out.
It is still a great read though and one I would thoroughly recommend 🙂
I still believe both books from this series look interesting. You’ve certainly had some good promotional posts for them. I think I might have already added the first to my wishlist at Amazon.
Hi Kelly,
This series is definitely coming into its own as it progresses, with the characters growing into their roles.
The books are suitable for reading as stand alone stories, as the backstory isn’t overly complicated and is quickly explained in just a few lines, so seamlessly that you probably wouldn’t even notice!
I don’t know if you read the author’s bio, or visited his website, however he has definitely focussed this storyline around one of his personal passions – rock music – a genre of music I know you also enjoy. There is plenty of high profile band name dropping and the Iowa Hall of Rock ‘n’ Roll Fame which is often mentioned, is very much a real venue…

Thanks, as ever, for your visit 🙂
Thanks for that link! Not to be confused with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame located in Cleveland, OH which covers the entire genre, not just Iowa.

I don’t know much about Iowa musicians, but I have a blogging buddy in IA and I’ll have to find out if he knows about this place!
Ah Yes! Yours is a much grander venue altogether.
I followed the link through to the official website and saw what an outstanding list of events they have unfortunately had to cancel / postpone, due to coronavirus!
Such a shame that this is happening worldwide and giving a thought to those venues which will never have the capacity to reopen again when this is all over.
We have just discovered that the principal theatre in one of our major cities outside of London, has filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors permanently and I doubt they will be the only one.
I don’t think the economic damage caused by Covid, is going to be repaired in my lifetime, although for anyone brave enough to come up with a sound business idea, now might be the opportunity they will never get again!
Thanks for the link 🙂
