New On The Shelf At Fiction Books This Week

Picture of an English red post boxMailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house during the last week.

Be warned that Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

Mailbox Monday, is currently ‘on tour’ and being hosted by a different blogger each month.

Your host for April 2013 is: Mari over at ‘MariReads’

So why not stop by, leave a link to your own Mailbox Monday post, oh! and don’t forget to leave a comment for Mari, after all, we all like to receive them!

This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from!

It was almost a year ago, when I posted my review of  ‘Skin Games’ by Adam Pepper, so I was more than pleased to be in touch with this talented author again just recently, when he was kind enough to offer Fiction Books the opportunity to review his latest book, a psychological thriller, with Adam’s trademark hint of darkness,  ‘Buried A Man I Hated There’.

Doesn’t the title alone send shivers down your spine?

-.-

BURIED A MAN I HATED THERE

Delusions drive them. Deceptions define them. Secrets consume them. BURIED A MAN I HATED THERE: A dark and unusual psychological thriller.

Jack Maddox is distraught after the mysterious deaths of his wife and young daughter. His head constantly aches and his memories are hazy and lost.

Heidi, his wife’s twin sister, does her best to help Jack cope. Ever reliable and dutiful, she encourages Jack to move on with his life.

Each Valentine’s Day, they meet in a field in rural Vermont for a picnic in the snow.

Jack has a secret that’s buried deep. Heidi has a secret of her own. Will they unravel their secrets, or will their secrets unravel them?

Salvation lies hidden in the snow, and in each other.

ADAM PEPPER

Adam doesn’t seem to talk about himself an awful lot. His site ‘bio’ is remarkably impersonal, short and sweet, but I’ll give you the official potted version anyway:

I think consistent voice is one of my strong points. Whether I’m writing horror, crime or even mainstream fiction, there are certain constants to my style. I’m a native New Yorker, born and bred. One thing we don’t struggle with in New York is expressing unique and individual voice.

photograph of author Adam PepperAt times disturbing and grim, others raunchy and comical, Adam Pepper’s work is known for a unique blend of horror, suspense and speculative fiction.

‘MEMORIA’, Adam’s debut novel, reached number 1 on the Dark Delicacies Best Seller list and received rave reviews from Cemetery Dance and Chronicle.

‘SUPER FETUS ‘, his outrageous Bizarro novella was called “In-your-face, allegorical social commentary” by esteemed reviewer, Paul Goat Allen.

His quick-hitting short work has appeared in genre magazines including The Best Of Horrorfind, Vol. 2 and Space And Time.

Adam’s non-fiction credits span from New Woman Magazine to The Journal News.

I did come across this great reply to a question Adam was asked, in one of his rare interviews. I thought it was worthy of a permanent place in my rotating ‘Random Quotes’ side bar:

I don’t consider myself strictly a horror author, but everything I do has a dark and cynical slant. That’s the worldview I bring to my fiction. I’ve always been attracted to bleak and gritty plots filled with disenchanted and alienated characters. I’m a fan of the underdog, of the underestimated and underappreciated. That’s just me.

I also discovered this great ‘frank and friendly’ exchange which Adam had with Jim, across at ‘Ginger Nuts Of Horror’, in September 2011. You should really check it out if you have a few moments, Jim has a great interviewing style and Adam has some equally succinct and candid responses.

A small Mailbox this week, but one which I am more than pleased with ….

What’s new on your shelves this week?

This psychological thriller, was gifted as a request for me to read and leave my comments about, by its author, Adam Pepper and as such was free of charge.

This will in no way influence any comments I may express about the book, in any blog article I may post. Any thoughts or comments will be my own personal opinion and I am in no way being monetarily compensated for this, or any other article.

I can’t remember a time, even as a child, when I haven’t been passionate about books and reading.
I began blogging, when I realised just how many other people out there shared my passion for the written word and I have been continually amazed at the wealth of books that are available and the amount of great new friends I have made, from literally 'The Four Corners Of The World'.
