New On The Shelf At Fiction Books This Week

The latest book to find its place on the shelf  here at Fiction Books, is another win from the lovely people at Goodreads, with the complimentary paperback copy being sent promptly by independent publisher, Legend Press, thanks so much for the excellent service to Lucy Chamberlain.
I really can’t believe that this is the fourth such review copy I have won, this from someone who never usually wins so much as the smallest raffle prize!
I entered this particular giveaway because I was so interested and intrigued by the premise and storyline of, To The Edge Of Shadows and was maybe also a little influenced by the fact that the book’s author Joanne Graham, lives not a million miles away from here, in rural Devon and it is always good to be able to support a ‘local’ writer.
Check out the book  – ‘TO THE EDGE OF SHADOWS’
Sarah Phillips longs for the simple life – a job to fill her days, a home to return to and a small amount of steps to count between the two. Seriously injured in a car crash when she was thirteen, Sarah has no memory of her childhood or the family she lost.
Ellie Wilson remembers her own past only too well, the cruelty she suffered at the hands of a mother that abused her and a father who couldn’t protect her. She finds Sarah fascinating, a mirror to the life she never had.
But as curiosity spills over into obsession, and as Sarah’s world begins to unravel, Ellie moves ever closer.
Now meet the author – JOANNE GRAHAM
Image Of Author Joanne GrahamJoanne Graham was born in Wolverhampton, UK in the 1970′s, the youngest of five children.
She has been lucky enough to live in many beautiful places such as South Wales, Cumbria, and Australia, all of which have been an inspiration in many ways, although these days she lives in rural Mid Devon with her two children and too many cats!
After studying Health and Social Welfare at university she worked in a prison and a school for teenagers displaying challenging behaviour, before turning to inclusive education in a mainstream secondary school.
She has been writing since she was given a typewriter for her eleventh birthday, with her first book, ‘Lacey’s House’ being published in 2013 by Legend Press and winning the Luke Bitmead Award.

Her first book, Lacey’s House was published in 2013 and her second book, To the Edge of Shadows was published in 2014.
I love every part of the book writing process from the excitement of the initial idea to weaving all the tiny elements of the story from the air. I draw my inspiration from the landscape around me, from quirky characters I meet and from the strange and convoluted thoughts that dance between my ears.

I can’t remember a time, even as a child, when I haven’t been passionate about books and reading.
I began blogging, when I realised just how many other people out there shared my passion for the written word and I have been continually amazed at the wealth of books that are available and the amount of great new friends I have made, from literally 'The Four Corners Of The World'.

    • Thanks Tracy,

I am definitely intrigued by this storyline, so I am looking forward to it getting to the top of my review pile!

Have a great week and thanks for stopping by.

  • Well I would say you’ve found your proper milieu for winning contests – Goodreads! Congratulations on another win. It sounds very interesting, so I can understand why you entered the giveaway.

Nothing new at my house this week.

    • Hi Kelly,

I must admit that it feels good to get that ‘congratulations’ email land in my inbox!

I do now make a point of only entering the giveaways I am really interested in reading, which only adds to the speculation as to whether I might be a winner or not!
‘To The Edge Of Shadows’ certainly had me intrigued and interested to know more about the relationship between Sarah and Ellie.

I do tend to become a little downcast when I don’t get any new books in the week, but in all honesty I am never going to make a dent in my bookshelves, so it really isn’t a big drama.

I hope that you manage to catch up on reading something from your shelves and have a good week.

    • Hi Kristen,

I find that these days I am only entering giveaway competitions if the book is one which I especially find intriguing or interesting sounding, so they are all edge of the seat entries that I really want to win.

I have a serious amount of bookshelves crammed full of unread books, but it is still so satisfying when a new win lands on the doormat!

Thanks for the visit this week, it was good to hear from you.

    • Hi Kathy,

When the lottery first came out, we religiously used to buy one ticket a week. After many years of doing this and winning nothing, we decided it was pretty much a fools game and stopped. These days hubbie will buy the occasional ticket online, if there is a particularly big roll-over happening … and still nothing! …. But perhaps that is where we are going wrong. Perhaps I should be the one buying the tickets!

Thanks for stopping by and have a good week.

    • Hi Serena,

I am intrigued when the premise says that Sarah’s world begins to unravel and Ellie moves ever closer. There is obviously some deep and dark psychology going on between the two women, with Ellie seemingly the stronger. I wonder just how far she will go to get what she wants?

Thanks for co-hosting MM each week, I really appreciate it.

    • Hi Lucy,

I am wondering just what it is about Sarah’s life that Ellie finds so alluring. Not being able to remember your family must be quite traumatic and leave a large void inside you, not something to really be envied, no matter how bad your own upbringing.

I shall be interested to see just how fully Joanne manages to develop these two characters and exactly where this storyline might be heading!

Thanks for stopping by, it seems like an age since we last spoke.

    • Thanks for those kind words Elizabeth, I really appreciate them, although I quite often compare my posts to other sites and find my own lacking terribly in spontaneity and substance.

I have to admit that I couldn’t even begin to present a post in the way I do, without the help of hubbie, who keeps all the updates up together and is always there if I need anything technical updated or changed. I couldn’t manage without him, so perhaps I have an unfair advantage and I should be encouraged to learn the technical back-end aspects of WordPress for myself!

I just know that I am going to enjoy ‘To The Edge Of Shadows’ and can’t wait for it to get to the top of my review pile!

    • Hi Mary Ann,

I know that I can download complimentary copies from NetGalley on a fairly regular basis, however it is still much more satisfying to actually receive that email telling me that I have won a physical copy of a book. I can’t ever contemplate a time when I won’t enjoy the touch, look and smell of that pristine new print copy!

Thanks for touching base this week, it is always good to hear from you.

    • Thanks Vicki and many thanks to yourself and the other MM ladies, for continuing to provide a platform for us all to be able to feature our new books and authors … I always manage to find a few books each week to add to my own list … As if I need any more!!

  • It is always good to support local writers and To The Edge Of Shadows sounds like an interesting book and it looks like the author truly loves to write. Happy reading!

    • Hi Naida,

The premise of ‘To The Edge Of Shadows’ is really intriguing and perhaps even a little spooky. The idea that one person should have endured so much abuse and hatred is bad enough, but that they are then so embittered as to want to take advantage of someone else’s misery, is very strange indeed!

Joanne seems like a great communicator. Her website and blog are updated very regularly and her posts are always so interesting. I really wish that I just had the time to sit and read them thoroughly and leave a few comments!

I hope that all is well with you and that you are enjoying your blog free freedom!

      Have a great weekend.
