“ON WRITING TEARAGH’T” – A GUEST POST By CRAIG NEWNES
After the remains of the Armada hobble back to Spain, an extraordinary document – part diary, part love letter – is discovered on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. When it is translated, it reveals – not treachery nor evidence of Spanish military ambition – but something about the human condition. Love, loss, laughter and the madness of war are all in Tearagh’t.
This is an unusual novel. The author has developed a whole new language, which brings the experience of being on a ship in the Armada alive, as it battles its way down the English Channel, interspersed by some strange, incognito runs ashore. The diary is complicated by the Jewish origins of the narrator and his conversation in his head with his lover back home in sixteenth century Spain. But the lover, as it turns out, is also thinking about him – and she sounds remarkably modern…

Hi Yvonne – great that you finally found us again and that you’ll pop in from time to time. I read and enjoyed Bridges some time back now. Looks like you have great variety of books on your reading mind right now.
Hi Kathryn,
The author of ‘Bridges’, Marie Murnane sent me through copy for a great guest post, which I shall be sharing very soon.
I have very eclectic reading tastes and with the exception of science fiction and fantasy, you will find something from just about every genre there is, on either my virtual or real book shelves.
Thanks for making me feel so welcome and I look forward to sharing my reading agenda on a more regular basis 🙂
Enjoy your reads and your week!
Thanks Pat,
‘Falling’ is certainly keeping me turning the pages, with no idea where the story line is heading or what is going to happen next.
Totally random and completely out of sequence, I have read one of Emma’s more recent books, ‘Hidden’ and I loved it, so that bodes well.
Also, Emma’s books are generally stand alone stories, so I don’t have a mountainous back-story to catch up on.
Enjoy your week and ‘Happy Reading’ 🙂
I love these kinds of posts, Yvonne. 🙂 Thinking a bit outside the box, your current read might qualify for WIAN as a book with a season (Fall) in the title…. if nothing else better comes along.
I’m looking forward to your review of the first book, as well as the one you’re reading now. They’re quite different, but both sound good. I’ll just have to wait and see on your “up next” selection.
I’ve been reading the same book since the year began. It’s good, but I just haven’t had as much time to read as I’d like!
Hi Kelly,
Can’t you just tell that I am back in the swing of work after the Christmas / New Year break. The first few books were added to my Goodreads Reading Challenge quite quickly, but my latest book has been hanging around for over a week and I am still only half way through!
I hope that I can keep up with the ‘What’s In A Name’ challenge, as whilst it may only be half a dozen books throughout the year, finding the right titles amongst all my outstanding review requests might be quite tricky.
‘Bridges’ definitely belongs to a genre that I don’t intend to read too often, however author Marie Murnane has been kind enough to send through copy for a lovely guest post and I just couldn’t say ‘no’, although if truth be known, I didn’t really want to anyway, as this might be a fun read.
Thanks for stopping by. I haven’t participated in this meme for some time now and I had forgotten just how much I liked the format and enjoyed laying out my reading achievements and goals 🙂
These all sound good. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
Hi Kathy,
I can definitely say that I rarely read two books in a row from the same genre, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As you say, they all sound good in their own right, although I might be slightly biased towards ‘Falling’ just now, but that is probably unintentional and is simply about that being the book I am engrossed in as I write this post.
Stan Schatt is one of my regular author review requests and in the past, some of his books have taken me well out of my reading comfort zone, but as it turned out, in such a nice way. ‘Murder At The River Bend Retirement Resort’ was just a good cozy mystery and my review is on its way.
Thanks for stopping by and Happy Reading 🙂
Happy reading.
Thanks Mystica,
It seems like ages since we last connected, so I hope that you are well and enjoyed a very Happy Christmas and New Year 🙂
Bridges sounds good. The kids are back in school but my husband has one more week off. Come see what I’m reading
HI Sarah,
I don’t tend to read a lot of contemporary fiction, despite the fact that I have quite eclectic reading tastes. However, after a run of good psychological thrillers and murder mysteries, this seemed like a good time to drop in some lighter reading and I also have a great guest post to kickstart ‘Bridges’
I hope that you manage to get some ‘me reading time’ this week 🙂
Enjoy your books Yvonne, I am a Maria Murnane fan. 🙂
Hi Naida,
‘Falling’ is proving to be a very suspenseful and intense read, so something like ‘Bridges’ is going to bring a much needed touch of lightness to my reading schedule.
This will be the first Maria Murnane book I have read and I have a great Guest Post, which I think you will enjoy, to kick it all off, so watch this space 🙂
