“Flora was at home sitting on the sofa and reading the plethora of magazines she had bought, most of which seemed to be filled with what Kate Middleton would be wearing and who would be at the wedding in Westminster Abbey. The aroma of something delicious was coming from the oven in the kitchen.

“What a yummy smell!”

“Your favourite – fish pie from Waitrose!”

“Aah, how sweet of you, so nice to be at home,” Jemima said. “And am I pleased to see you after the day I’ve had! Paul Pratt is the bane of my life. At one point I thought that I was going to have to call Mr V, which I hate to do, as he’ll think I can’t handle things on my own. All I want to do is eat that pie, watch telly, have a bath and go to bed. I think that tomorrow will be great – as long as Paul doesn’t get in my way!”

“Oh…” Flora sounded suddenly nervous. “Jem, I didn’t want to tell you until after your event tomorrow but… I think you should know, Fritz is engaged.”

Jemima’s brain went numb and suddenly she couldn’t see or hear anything. Her throat tightened so she couldn’t swallow and her heart began to pound so frantically she thought she was having a heart attack. Spasms started careering down her left arm to her hand, which was suddenly mottled and tingling.

“Jem, say something. I shouldn’t have told you but I have just found out that her parents are taking them both to your event tomorrow; apparently they’re clients, did you know that? Fritz just called me to tell you. He feels awful but he only realised tonight that it was your party and it is too late to bail – the tickets are £5000 each.””

I can’t remember a time, even as a child, when I haven’t been passionate about books and reading.
I began blogging, when I realised just how many other people out there shared my passion for the written word and I have been continually amazed at the wealth of books that are available and the amount of great new friends I have made, from literally 'The Four Corners Of The World'.

  • Not my usual fare, but I still think this would be an interesting series to try out. I like the writing from the excerpt you’ve shared here. Are you enjoying it so far?

    • Hi Kelly,

I am actually enjoying this one much more than I thought I might. There are some elements of a ‘cozy’ about the storyline, but there are also slightly more serious undertones, which lift it out of that genre and raise it to a higher level.

The characters are all in place, the storyline knows exactly where it is headed and having now read a little more of the book, the dastardly deed has been done!

I am only a little concerned that as a little over 60% of the book has gone, there may not be enough time for amateur sleuth Jemima Pearl to crack the case – I do so hope that author Josie Goodbody doesn’t feel that she has to rush the ending!

As a debut book, I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality throughout so far, and can’t wait to read the second and third instalments.

Thanks for visiting and I hope that things are ticking along nicely for you 🙂

  • I suddenly fancy trying Waitrose’s fish pie! Sadly our town doesn’t have one, the nearest is either Wellington or Exeter, both of which we get to occasionally. The book sounds like it might be a fun read.

    • Hi Cath,

I too quite enjoy a good fish pie from time to time, however as I read this page of the book at about 6am, the urge was not upon me right then!

We are quite fortunate here in Frome, as we have all the major supermarkets very close by, including a Waitrose in nearby Warminster, so choice is never really a problem for us.

This is actually quite a good crime story and whilst there are one or two lighter moments of dialogue and narrative, I certainly wouldn’t class it as too ‘cozy’ a mystery. I definitely intend to carry on with the series in due course.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment, your continued support is always appreciated 🙂

  • What a tease you are … you have me intrigued with that excerpt.

In two minds about this one. Whilst like Kelly I did enjoy the excerpt my first thoughts (rather oddly) were that already it sounded a bit dated with mention of Kate Middleton. Still, never say never, if presented with the book I would more than likely as not read it.

    • Hi Felicity,

I can explain your concern over the Kate Middleton reference really easily… When author Josie Goodbody contacted me, she was initially asking me to take a look at her third book in the Jemima Fox Investigates series, ‘The Monte Carlo Connection’.

However, as she is an author who lives locally to me, I decided to offer her reviews of all three books, agreeing that I would read them in sequential order. ‘The Diamond Connection’ is the debut book in the series, was written several years ago, and was published back in 2015.

I hope that makes sense, and if you are interested, at a little over 60% done with the book, I can honestly say it would be one worth reading, should the opportunity arise for you.

Thanks for stopping by, great to chat with you as always 🙂

  • Interesting teaser lines, although I’ve never heard of fish pie in my life and I don’t think I’d like the smell of it lol! This sounds like a good who dunnit. Enjoy it!

    • Hi Naida,

Fish pie has been around for years, although in all fairness Wikipedia does reckon that it is a dish which originated in England.

There are so many recipes out there, that finding a no nonsense version was quite difficult. I opted for this one from the good old BBC, because the recipe is straight to the point and it actually looks good too!

Because there are so many other ingredients aside from the fish, there is actually very little smell when it is cooking and as a ‘take it or leave it’ fish person, it is often a meal of choice for me.

I am still not quite done with this book, but it is shaping up to be an excellent debut novel and I haven’t managed to work out the entire plot yet!

Thanks for visiting and I hope that you are reading some great books 🙂
