‘HEMLOCK LAKE’ by CAROLYN J. ROSE
So as not to show any spoilers I have not included a synopsis, however, if you want to find out more about the story, just click on the book image, or to read more about both book and author go here.
If you don’t really want to read any major spoilers, then you can tease yourself a little more, by reading the first few lines of the story … here.
Sometimes I feel like one of those butterflies pinned to a piece of cardboard inside a display case. I’m alive. I can see where I’d like to fly to. But I can’t escape without dragging the pins and cardboard with me.
“You can go to the other side of the globe. But the past is right up here.” She touched her forehead. “All it takes is the right word, a slant of the sun, or the sight of your face in the mirror, and you’re right back again.”

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by …
MizB of ‘Should Be Reading’.
Anyone can take part, by just doing the following:
Grab your current read.
Open to a random page.
- Share a couple of “teaser” sentences, from somewhere on that page.
- Be careful not to share “spoiler” sentences.
- Remember to share the title and author too.
- Head on over to ‘should be reading’ and leave a link to your post, so that others can share it and you can share other people’s.
It would be great if you then decided to leave a comment for MizB, as we all like to receive them and are interested in sharing your thoughts.

As this was an author invitation to read and review, a complimentary Kindle download of ‘ Hemlock Lake’, was gifted to me by its author, Carolyn J. Rose
This will in no way influence any comments I may express about the book, in any blog articles I may post. Any thoughts or comments will be my own personal opinion and I am in no way being monetarily compensated for this, or any other article.

I particularly liked the second teaser you shared. It’s so true how the past is always right there, just waiting for the memory to be reawakened.
The following paragraph is taken from page 145 of “Master and God” by Lindsey Davis.
“Generally, Lucilla understood that any affair, or even marriage, would mean she lost control of her career. Men took up your time. They resented you having other interests. They made demands, even if you could avoid bearing their children. So although her women clients regularly asked when she was going to get a love life, Lucilla murmured obliquely that she was still looking.”
Hi Kelly,
Whilst I am not so sure that I like this teaser as much as the first, I can quite agree with the sentiment behind the words. Past thoughts and experiences which I think I have consigned to the distant banks of my memory, often have the knack of coming back to haunt me at seemingly random times, in the strangest of places and for no good reason at all, but they are no less real or emotionally challenging than they ever were!
It sounds as though you are becoming embroiled in another of your favourite Roman sagas with ‘Master and God’. Whilst not something I would probably read through choice, unless as a review request, I do love those teaser lines, especially the line about men taking up your time! After 35 years married and no children, I know all about it!

I have included a link to the book, so that others can check it out and thanks for taking the time to leave your comment.
Hmm, I’m the opposite to Kelly in that whilst I liked the first paragraph I didn’t like the second one nearly as much.
God placed his his hands on his forehead and closed his eyes. “So what do they believe in, then?”
“Oh they believe in power and money, in the good life, wild parties, things like that.”

Hi Tracy,
The first teaser is definitely the one that does it for me as well. The context of not really being able to escape the present, without carrying all your baggage with you into the future, even though you may think that you can lose it along the way, is just so poignant and sadly so often true.
Great teaser lines from yourself this week, I was left wondering just who it is that God is talking to. Whoever it is, it would seem that God is slightly losing his patience.
I have never come across this book or author before and just had to check both out in a little more detail, after being so completely flummoxed by those lines. This probably isn’t a book I would enjoy all that much and given your very candid and honest review style, I can’t wait to read your own thoughts on the story.
I shall leave a link, so that any other visitors who are curious can check it out …

Thanks for stopping by and joining in ‘Teaser Tuesday’ this week.
I really like both of these paragraphs here Yvonne, very moving and true I think too. I hope you enjoy the book.
Hi Lindsay,
I am quite a way into the book now and so far really enjoying it, thanks.
Carolyn J. Rose, is one of my favourite mystery authors and I must say that thus far, this is the best one of her books I have read. I fully intend to read the sequel book next, to ensure the continuity of the story, I don’t want to break the chain of events.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by, I always appreciate your comments.
Interesting.

Sort of a Christian mystery/adventure for kids!
Hi and thanks for deciding to visit Fiction Books today. I love ‘meeting’ new people, so your visits and comments will always be welcome and appreciated.
I had no real difficulty choosing teaser lines this week, as the book is full of some great descriptive writing, which is all adding to the intrigue of the storyline.
I shall be stopping by shortly to check out your TT for this week.
Wow! What interesting teasers! The first one is especially striking. I can imagine the sense of helplessness and longing she would feel. The second one was interesting too because I can definitely agree that the past is always a blink away. The teasers make it sound like a good book! I might have to look into it. 🙂
My Teaser Tuesday is here if you want to drop by!
Hi Alex,
Thanks for deciding to visit Fiction Books this week and welcome back to the blogosphere. I love ‘meeting’ new people, so your visits and comments will always be appreciated.
I’ll let you into a secret …. The two teaser paragraphs run consecutively in the book and form part of a conversation between two people, with the very insightful and emotional first sentences being spoken by a man.
I’m not certain that this book would be gory enough for you, however it is an excellent mystery story, full of suspense and double guessing, right up my street.
I enjoyed both teasers, they both have me wanting to give the book a try sometime.
Here’s my Teaser Tuesday
–Kimberly @ Turning the Pages
Hi Kimberly,
If you enjoy a good, well written mystery suspense story; with well defined characters and excellent descriptive writing, then Carolyn’s books are a good place to start. I have read several of her books now and ‘Hemlock Lake’ ranks high up there. I shall definitely be reading the sequel ‘Through A Yellow Wood’ next, so as not to lose my thread with the storyline.
Thanks for stopping by, your visits and comments are always appreciated.
I do like that second quote, how true about the memories. Although the first one about the butterflies is a great one as well.
Happy reading!
Hi Naida,
I was quite fortunate in finding good teaser lines this week, which are intriguing enough to make you want to know more, yet don’t give too much away about the storyline. Even better that those lines can be so profound and thought provoking in their own right.
Thans for stopping by. I hope that all is well with you.
I like both. The second one is truly…true!
Hi Vicki,
It is so true that no matter how much of your physical life and environment you change, your past is always with you in your head. Just the simplest thought, or look, or word, having the power to bring all those buried thoughts and emotions back to the forefront of your mind, like it was only yesterday.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, it is great to hear from you and I hope that all is well.
oooh I love the teaser, especially
‘All it takes is the right word, a slant of the sun, or the sight of your face in the mirror, and you’re right back again.’
Hi Violet,
It is SO good to catch up with you again, it seems like an age since we last spoke. Time rushes by so quickly and ‘real life’ has a habit of getting in the way of reading and blogging!
Carolyn does have a very descriptive style of writing which I really enjoy, as it is so easy to engage with. She is able to convey the most simple of thoughts, so eloquently, with her choice of words and phrasing.
Have a great weekend.
