I particularly liked the second teaser you shared. It’s so true how the past is always right there, just waiting for the memory to be reawakened.
The following paragraph is taken from page 145 of “Master and God” by Lindsey Davis.
“Generally, Lucilla understood that any affair, or even marriage, would mean she lost control of her career. Men took up your time. They resented you having other interests. They made demands, even if you could avoid bearing their children. So although her women clients regularly asked when she was going to get a love life, Lucilla murmured obliquely that she was still looking.”

Whilst I am not so sure that I like this teaser as much as the first, I can quite agree with the sentiment behind the words. Past thoughts and experiences which I think I have consigned to the distant banks of my memory, often have the knack of coming back to haunt me at seemingly random times, in the strangest of places and for no good reason at all, but they are no less real or emotionally challenging than they ever were!
It sounds as though you are becoming embroiled in another of your favourite Roman sagas with ‘Master and God’. Whilst not something I would probably read through choice, unless as a review request, I do love those teaser lines, especially the line about men taking up your time! After 35 years married and no children, I know all about it!

Hmm, I’m the opposite to Kelly in that whilst I liked the first paragraph I didn’t like the second one nearly as much.

The first teaser is definitely the one that does it for me as well. The context of not really being able to escape the present, without carrying all your baggage with you into the future, even though you may think that you can lose it along the way, is just so poignant and sadly so often true.
Great teaser lines from yourself this week, I was left wondering just who it is that God is talking to. Whoever it is, it would seem that God is slightly losing his patience.
I have never come across this book or author before and just had to check both out in a little more detail, after being so completely flummoxed by those lines. This probably isn’t a book I would enjoy all that much and given your very candid and honest review style, I can’t wait to read your own thoughts on the story.

Carolyn J. Rose, is one of my favourite mystery authors and I must say that thus far, this is the best one of her books I have read. I fully intend to read the sequel book next, to ensure the continuity of the story, I don’t want to break the chain of events.

I had no real difficulty choosing teaser lines this week, as the book is full of some great descriptive writing, which is all adding to the intrigue of the storyline.

Wow! What interesting teasers! The first one is especially striking. I can imagine the sense of helplessness and longing she would feel. The second one was interesting too because I can definitely agree that the past is always a blink away. The teasers make it sound like a good book! I might have to look into it. 🙂

I’ll let you into a secret …. The two teaser paragraphs run consecutively in the book and form part of a conversation between two people, with the very insightful and emotional first sentences being spoken by a man.
I’m not certain that this book would be gory enough for you, however it is an excellent mystery story, full of suspense and double guessing, right up my street.
I enjoyed both teasers, they both have me wanting to give the book a try sometime.

I have read several of her books now and ‘Hemlock Lake’ ranks high up there. I shall definitely be reading the sequel ‘Through A Yellow Wood’ next, so as not to lose my thread with the storyline.

It is so true that no matter how much of your physical life and environment you change, your past is always with you in your head. It is SO good to catch up with you again, it seems like an age since we last spoke. Time rushes by so quickly and ‘real life’ has a habit of getting in the way of reading and blogging!
Carolyn does have a very descriptive style of writing which I really enjoy, as it is so easy to engage with. She is able to convey the most simple of thoughts, so eloquently, with her choice of words and phrasing.
