I clicked on your link to read more about the story and was fascinated to see that you don’t have doggie bags. We do see huge steaks on the menu at some places here but I don’t think many people order them. I hope you enjoy the book!

It’s not to say that we don’t have any doggie bags, but one would only be offered somewhere like a pizza place and certainly not in a restaurant or pub. I guess this is just one of those cultural anomalies which makes us the same, yet different!
I have only just started the book, but so far, so good.

If you or I were talking to Joel in the present, then he would look and sound quite normal.
However, taking into account that ‘The Mine’ is a time travel story, then as a house guest Joel wouldn’t fit in quite so well and as his host you might be forgiven for feeling a little uncomfortable with his appearance, mannerisms and conversation!
A good little storyline is building here and although I can see where it might be heading, the final outcome is still very much unknown.

I can’t believe you all don’t use doggie bags in your little corner of the world. When we eat in a set down restaurant we almost always are served more than we can eat, so we almost always ask for doggie bags.

We did notice how large a US portion of food is, compared to what you might expect in a UK restaurant. US visitors to this country must be quite shocked when they sit down to eat, especially as the average price of a smaller meal here is so much more than that of your large one.
Perhaps that is why we don’t typically have doggie bags, as we are only served up the right amount of food for the average appetite? Anyway, most good restaurants would look at us aghast if we were to ask for a doggie bag. Typically, the only food ‘to go’ here, comes from a takeaway restaurant, or possibly a pizza place.
Time travel is a new genre of book for me too, although so far I am really enjoying the story. It isn’t too heavy going, although I believe that there may be challenging times ahead for our main protagonist, as he wrestles with his conscience.

Some might say that they were one and the same thing!!
I checked out the link to ‘The Devil In The Marshalsea’, but dunce that I am, didn’t realise that Marshalsea was actually a real gaol in London, until I decided to google it on the off chance. This sounds like a great story, an epic debut novel and as you so rightly say, a book I would really enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation, it’s already on my list.

Thanks for dropping by. I am really enjoying the book so far and there are plenty of interesting passages I could have highlighted, I was spoilt for choice, so just decided to stop on the page I was reading and select something from there.

I have to admit that taken out of context, this line can appear a little random, however when you take into account that ‘The Mine’ is a story of time travel, then it suddenly takes on an entirely new perspective.
At this stage, I am not sure which of the two men is the most confused by the situation, and it seems as though things are set to get a whole lot worse!

I am so glad that it isn’t just my small corner of the world that doesn’t really do doggie bags, I was beginning to feel very paranoid.
Whenever we have visited the US, they are a common request in just about every kind of eating establishment, from takeaway to silver service. Over here a silver service restaurant would throw you out if you asked for such a thing … it simply isn’t the done thing.
I guess it makes us finish up all the food on our plates, rather than it go to waste!
